Coppin State University, through its Center for Strategic Entrepreneurship, provides students and other aspiring entrepreneurs with the opportunity to learn and apply real-world business skills and concepts that will help elevate and empower the university and surrounding community. Coppin State University is one of four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in Maryland. The university transforms lives, offering affordable education while also fostering leadership, social responsibility, civic and community engagement, cultural diversity and inclusion, and economic development.
All about the relationship
Coppin State University designs programs enabling students to learn and grow inside and outside the classroom focusing on healthcare, teacher education, criminal justice, technology, sciences, business, and the growing field of data sciences. Coppin State University is an urban research institution which is home to rigorous academic programs, well-regarded faculty, and innovative research and partnerships that allow the anchor institution to invest resources into the surrounding community.
The Coppin State University College of Business and its Center for Strategic Entrepreneurship (CSE), contribute significantly to the university’s work to engage with the community and foster partnerships that help address its needs. A new building for the College of Business and CSE will open in 2023, and will serve as a state-of-the-art innovation and information hub for entrepreneurs, startups, and small business owners. The school is working to establish itself as a major contributor to closing the wealth gap through local and national partnerships.

“The Center for Strategic Entrepreneurship is well positioned to spur innovation across our campus and community,” said Dr. Sadie R. Gregory, Interim Dean of the College of Business. “The college is looking forward to leading the conversation on entrepreneurship and providing business support for founders, early-stage ideas, and small businesses looking for capital and advisement.”
In February, Coppin State University was awarded a multi-year grant from the Charles Schwab Foundation to prepare students to become investment advisors, and obtain their FINRA Series securities licenses upon graduation from the program.
The Center for Nanotechnology at Coppin State University is also leveraging partnerships and outside support to enhance research, education, and innovation on campus. In 2020, Coppin State University formed a partnership with American International University-Bangladesh, allowing students to perform research in STEM fields and prepare master’s degree programs and internships.
The University is also NCAA Division 1 student-athletes who model excellence in sport and in the classroom. Alumni include athletes who have competed in the Olympic Games, and NBA player Larry Stewart who played for the Seattle Supersonics. ESPN recently released the film “On and Coppin,” which highlights former coach Ron “Fang” Mitchell and chronicles the 1997 team’s win over No. 2 seed South Carolina to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
