A diverse learning environment doesn’t happen by accident. Northeastern Illinois University has built a strong foundation on diversity so its students can engage with those of different cultures, interests, beliefs, lifestyles, and socio-economic statuses. Then, once students leave, they can use their mindset of inclusion to impact the world for the better.
The student body at NEIU is a microcosm of diversity. Roughly 60 percent of NEIU students are of Hispanic, African American, Asian, and Native American descent, and more than 100 countries are represented on campus. In fact, U.S. News & World Report listed Northeastern as the most diverse student population among Midwest universities in 2017, and the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking recognized Northeastern as the 22nd most diverse university in the nation. To further assist its diverse students, NEIU is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Saint Xavier intentionally adapts to evolving student needs. One benefit of institutional longevity is wisdom, and the university has leveraged the talents and commitment of its faculty and staff to craft high-quality programs that educate students for competence, character, and career success within its three academic units.
The School of Nursing and Health Sciences was designated a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing for four consecutive terms. The Graham School of Management is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The College of Arts and Sciences is initiating new programs and engaged learning opportunities supported by a $1.46 million National Science Foundation grant (NSF 1832511) to increase the success of underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
“For nearly 175 years, SXU has prepared students for meaningful lives and successful careers. Our campus community is proud of our longstanding dedication to active, engaged learning and service to others. I am humbled to lead this remarkable institution and work collaboratively with our community to ensure it thrives for another 175 years and beyond.”
DR. LAURIE M. JOYNER, PRESIDENT
Through the strategic leadership of its board, management team, and campus community, Saint Xavier has improved its operating performance, paid down its debt, and nearly doubled its endowment during the last three years. These efforts are intended to ensure that SXU continues to deliver on its promise of educational excellence in perpetuity. SXU has built successful programs while remaining affordable. Saint Xavier was named a Best Value School among regional universities in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report and is the most affordable Catholic university in Illinois according to CollegeNavigator.gov.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION
Saint Xavier has one of the most diverse student populations among regional universities in the Midwest and is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). The university is closing racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps in graduation rates by providing a supportive environment that values and builds upon students’ strengths.
A member of the Illinois Equity in Attainment Initiative and recipient of a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title V program (P031S190311), SXU is aligning resources to support equitable student engagement, learning, and success. SXU has also been recognized as a Top Performer for Social Mobility by U.S. News for improving the lives of students, their families, and their communities.
Saint Xavier maintains the integrity of its original mission in transforming the lives of traditionally underserved students who go on to change the world for the better.
